Em termos de desempenho e qualidade de som, este registro (French Radio Broadcast), como diriam os fãs e colecionadores, é um "must-have". As performances em Paris à exemplo de "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" e "Cymbaline" figuram entre versões mais eficazes, e atmosféricas de toda a turnê. Talvez não o melhor show da banda, (algo difícil ser categórico), mas sem dúvida interessante, tanto em performance quanto em nitidez. The Godfatherecords conseguiu lapidar o que já era bom e como de costume desenvolvendo um trabalho de arte nas capas bastante caprichado. 

Em 23 de janeiro de 1970 "The Amazing Pudding" - "Atom Heart Mother" como seria então conhecida algumas semanas depois, vive talvez seu momento de maior inspiração antes de atingir sua concepção definitiva, assim foi vista por crítica e público dentro do que pude ler a respeito, um grande destaque na época, e sem dúvida é impressionante a beleza deste desempenho. O excepcional trabalho de guitarra (em todo o show) de "Gilmour" e seus os vocais agudos, são de uma dramaticidade plástica irretocável. De fato, todas as canções se vêem num ótimo momento da banda, e em minha opinião outra faixa que consegue ser destaque pelo desempenho inspirado, e raras vezes ao vivo, é "Main Theme From More". E como 'sempre' "Richard Wright" genial, proporciona uma ambiência psicodélica surreal ao episódio. "Mason" e "Waters" não ficam atrás, a base de um equilíbrio que beira a perfeição. Brindando a isso com rara felicidade, provavelmente é a melhor gravação do período. Boa audição!

Household Objects In Paris (The Godfatherecords G.R. 867/868)

The second release in a short time of the recently circulated tape source for The Pink Floyd’s incredible concert in Paris in January 1970, this time from the folks at Godfather Records. The first was The Man In Paris (Sigma 89), a very nice release that included a third disc that featured two songs in outstanding quality from a radio broadcast.

The main difference comes in the mastering of the show itself, Godfather chose not to increase the volume as much as Sigma so the background noise is not as bad nor are the mic bumps that occur sporadically such as the beginning of both discs as the taper was positioning his equipment. Case in point, take the beginning of the second disc as the band retakes the stage and begins the tune up for what would eventually be “Astronomy Domine”, the mic bumps sound quite jarring on the Sigma while hardly noticeable on Godfathers. They also elected not to increase the speed of the tape as much and filled in some small gaps with the original radio broadcast recording.

I was reading over the description of the show in Hodges and Priston’s superb Embryo: A Pink Floyd Chronology and found an interesting observation from a friend of the Floyd’s who was in attendance. He went on to say that when the band started “The Main Them From More” the audience had a very positive reaction, you can clearly hear it on this new recording.

Godfather also uses the original radio broadcast recording three times for this release, the first is at 11:48 – 11:56 during “A Saucerful Of Secrets” and the last two gaps are both in “Atom Heart Mother”, the first at 8:08 – 8:19 and at 23:33 – 23:45, the slices are excellent with the first two being hard to notice. Anyone who has heard the original tape knows that the volume does fluctuate slightly throughout the entire recording, from what I would guess it is the azimuth coordinator in all its glory. I like that Godfather chose to use the older radio source, it would have been extremely jarring to hear the excellent sounding broadcast tape mixed in.

The packaging is tri gate fold sleeve with pictures from early 1970; the center spread has liner notes written by Alex The Gnome. The photos and graphics are over tattered looking paper giving the feeling of unearthing some long lost document. For those who wish to obtain the show with an excellent quality release at a more affordable price this is certainly a viable opportunity to do so as Godfather has done an excellent job with this release. It’s not often Floyd collectors get such a wonderful treat to tantalize not only one’s ears but also one’s mind.

Pink Floyd - Saint Ouen 1972 (Sigma 72)

Este show realizado no dia 01 de dezembro de 1972, Centre Sportif de l’Ile des Vannes, Saint Ouen, na França, foi transmitido ao vivo pela rádio RTL. No entanto,  ela foi uma estação em AM e a transmissão era em mono. Existem algumas oscilações e flutuações no volume, nada que comprometa. No todo é um bom registro, a gravação teve um trabalho muito bom, proporcionando-lhe um efeito pseudo-stereo eficiente. Em especial, "Childhood’s End", que têm neste episódio, uma de suas melhores gravações. Creio no entanto, que a melhor seja a de Zurich em 09.12.72.

Em 1972, a RTL era a estação de rádio mais popular da Europa. Apesar de ter seu estúdio na França (público-alvo), ela teve um transmissor extremamente poderoso em Luxemburgo visando suplantar a legislação francesa que proibia a radiodifusão privada na época. Consequentemente, ela podia ser ouvida por toda a Europa Ocidental, mesmo na Escócia, durante dias mais claros. Na época, o Pink Floyd era muito popular na França. Sabedores do seu prestígio, a banda fez várias turnês por lá.

É curioso a banda ter concordado em transmitir um de seus shows ao vivo pela RTL, porque nesta época "Pink Floyd" tinha fortes laços com a BBC. Mas a RTL estava patrocinando nove de seus concertos na Europa em língua francesa nesta etapa, e não é tão surpreendente, talvez parte do negócio. O show aqui é o segundo a partir dessas nove datas. Esta foi sua última transmissão ao vivo em qualquer mídia até o ano de 1989. Em verdade TV de Veneza gravou um show, (gravado em novembro de 1974, mas foi editado antes de ser transmitido. e isto se deu muitos meses mais tarde). Dai sua importância histórica ser tão relevante.

A primeira metade de "Dark Side" seria o mais próximo que eles iriam atingir da versão final antes do lançamento do álbum oficial, no início de 1973. "On The Run" ainda seria reformulado, mas "The Great Gig In The Sky" apresenta a mesma melodia de piano por Richard Wright, faltando ainda os vocais. 

Também o sax ainda não se faz presente, que desempenha um papel importante nesta peça, bem como em "Money" e "Us and Them".  Entretanto a falta do saxofone é compensada pelos teclados de "Wright". Eles são muito mais proeminentes nestes arranjos do que viria ser no ano seguinte. Particularmente, prefiro muito mais os teclados. 

Além disso, a banda oferece um desempenho fantástico, sincronizado, confiante e entusiasmado da sua nova obra-prima . Outro detalhe curioso, o microfone de "Roger Waters" não está funcionando, e ninguém percebe até que chegue a hora de "Brain Damage" e "Eclipse", músicas que só acontecem com seus vocais. 

Dada esta ser é a primeira apresentação do novo álbum em Paris, o público lhes dá uma resposta entusiástica. Mas as coisas esquentam ainda mais na segunda parte, quando a banda toca as antigas e mais conhecidas canções, começando com um grande desempenho em "One Of These Days".

Apenas também à título de curiosidade, antes de "Careful With That Axe Eugene", o locutor RTL fala um pouco, mas nada que possa ser inconveniente. Ele diz: “Le deuxième titre que nous allons entendre de Pink Floyd, je vous rappelle que vous écoutez RTL et que c’est la deuxième partie du concert que Pink Floyd a donné à Paris Vendredi dernier, le deuxième morceau que nous allons entendre c’est ‘Careful with that Axe, Eugene’ …hmm, je ne sais pas très bien si ‘Axe’ s’écrit en tant que ‘Hache’ ou en tant que ‘Axe’. Vous savez que les membres de Pink Floyd sont tous d’anciens étudiants en architecture et ils aiment bien jouer un petit peu sur les ‘Careful with that Axe, Eugene’… Floyd Pink.”

Algo como "o segundo título que vamos ouvir de "Pink Floyd", lembro-lhe que você ouve a RTL e que esta é a segunda parte do concerto que "Pink Floyd" deu em Paris sexta-feira, a segunda música que nós vamos ouvir é " ... hmm, eu não sei muito bem se Axe é escrito como Axe ou como eixo. Você sabia que os membros do "Pink Floyd" são todos antigos alunos de arquitetura e que eles gostam de tocar um pouco mais quando é "Careful With That Axe Eugene"? ... com vocês, "Pink Floyd".

O show prossegue com a maestria de sempre. Até que então chega a vez de "Childhood’s End", que seria o encore no resto da turnê europeia até o início da turnê nos EUA em março, depois não mais. Confesso que este é o principal motivo deste post. Eu adoro está canção, e principalmente ao vivo a melodia é cativante, o mestre "Richard Wright" com excepcional desempenho em seu Hammond promove uma sensação essencialmente progressiva. O instrumental em seu todo é muito legal, tanto pelo baixo de "Waters" num ritmo bastante agradável, quanto "Gilmour" com belíssimos acordes, repleto de improvisos. Saint Ouen 1972 é um lançamento da Sigma muito interessante. O show é raro, e a qualidade do som é boa o suficiente para ser um importante complemento à  coleção. Boa audição!

O vídeo diz respeito a tour de 72, mas outra ocasião (Amsterdan). As imagens não são muito boas, mas é raro algum registro até mesmo com alguma coerência entre áudio e imagens, e infelizmente, bootlegs desta data são muitos ruins em termos de som. Achei interessante a oportunidade para quem possa desconhece-lo.

Fripp & Eno ‎– May 28, 1975 Olympia Paris, France (2011)

Este é um evento extremamente raro, quando Robert Fripp e Brian Eno em uma pequena turnê pela Europa, realizaram algumas apresentações, que hoje em dia são consideradas como históricas. Ambos estão no auge criativo em suas carreiras solo, desta feita se apresentando no Olympia em Paris, dia 28 de maio de 1975.

De maneira geral, a ideia seria cada qual reprisando seus sucessos individuais, mas dada a genialidade de ambos, os shows são totalmente inéditos em tudo que é apresentado. Abaixo, a matéria  pela DGMLive desta reunião magistral, certamente com criações muito além do seu tempo. Boa audição!

These show notes are written by long-standing Frippertronics expert and unofficial archivist, Allan Okada, whose help in the restoration of this concert has been invaluable. 

This historic recording documents an extremely rare and classic performance of a mysterious collaborative tour from two of the most creative and fascinating figures in rock. It is one of the most rewarding live recordings this writer has ever heard. For any fan of ‘No Pussyfooting’ or ‘Evening Star’, this live recording is of epic significance and thanks to the efforts of Alex Mundy, is now also comparable in audio quality, by synchronizing the most complete and best (by a mile) available live bootleg recording with Eno's stage tapes recently discovered. This tour also represents a turning point for both artists, about to enter new frontiers professionally and personally: Eno as an ambient music pioneer and Fripp’s re-emergence as a “small, mobile, intelligent unit”.

Here is the lead up to this 5th of a 7-show European mini-tour. Fripp just recently disbanded King Crimsonat a point which many would describe as their artistic pinnacle. Eno also recently parted ways with Roxy Music at a similar juncture and then aborted his first and only extensive solo tour after only a handful of shows, due to a collapsed lung. Fripp & Eno live in concert? What would they do? All the shows in Spain and France were, not surprisingly, accompanied with unrealistic fan expectations, hoping for a presentation of ‘21st Century Schizoid Man’ combined with ‘Baby’s on Fire’ perhaps? What this audience got was something entirely different. The programme was largely improvised and totally instrumental. Adding to the event's unorthodoxy was the absence of all conventional stage lighting. The sole illumination was provided by Malcolm LeGrice's colour saturated and looped short film ‘Berlin Horse’ projected behind the two shadowy figures on stage, visually mimicking the music. The result was an unprecedented live performance format, years ahead of its time. It was also mind-boggling to most of the unsuspecting 1975 audience, yielding wildly different reactions. Reportedly about half the shows on this tour were also plagued with some sort of major technical hazard, stemming from the venue, the PA or the duo's stage equipment. In Saint-Étienne, the audience went as far as booing the duo off the stage! Fortunately for us here, this Paris Olympia performance was technically flawless and from a musical standpoint, incredibly inspired.

Starting with the pre-recorded primordial drone ‘Water on Water’, the duo eventually walks on stage. Fripp begins playing through the “Enotronic system” (since Eno, not Fripp operated the tape machines on this tour). It's important to note that at this time, the mechanics of the Revox tape delay system was a mystery to the guitarist. This must have surely added a heavy dose of Eno’s "idiot glee" to the entire proceedings. Fripp moves this piece into uncharted territories with short volume pedal sweeps of lunacy before detaching from the delay system and beautifully soloing over the familiar backing loop of ‘Swastika Girls’. Very astute listeners will detect the unrealized main theme from King Crimson’s ‘Blue’ off the top. An intermission has the audience treated to Eno’s seminal ‘Discreet Music’ before the duo return to the stage with another improvised loop morphing into the now familiar ‘Wind On Water’ landscape. The sublimely serene ‘A Near Find in Rip Pop’ follows with Fripp soloing over a beautiful, strummed guitar piece (from the ‘Evening Star’ sessions) enhanced with synthetic animal screeches utilized months later on Eno’s ‘Zawinul/Lava’ track. Then just as you feel relaxed, Eno’s loop changes to something akin to a gigantic, looming dark cloud as Fripp hits the distortion pedal and fires off some solos of truly monstrous intensity. Eno gently takes the proceedings back down to Earth again by introducing the now infamous ‘Evening Star’ backing loop over which Fripp treats us to yet another wonderful solo before leaving the stage again, while ‘An Iron Frappe’ continues to envelop the crowd. The duo reappears for the final ‘Softy Gun Poison’ complete with tapes of sinister laughter and mysterious chatter (foreshadowing moments of Fripp’s upcoming ‘Exposure’), before leaving the stage for the last time, while (the then unknown) ‘An Index of Metals’ terrorizes the bewildered audience as they exit the venue. All in all, this lucky Paris audience was treated with the entirety of both classic albums as well as enough new material to constitute a third. As a bonus, we are also presented with Eno’s stage tapes in pure format including Test Loops from the sound check. What more could you ask from a live recording? Absolutely essential listening.

Welcome To The Machine

"Pink Floyd" realizou durante a turnê "Animals", 04 shows em Paris, entre 22 e 25 de fevereiro de 1977. Muitos críticos consideram que alguns dos melhores momentos da turnê aconteceram aqui, com a banda alcançando o auge em energia e vibração, proporcionando espetáculos memoráveis. O "Pavilhão" (Pavillion de Paris) foi em sua origem um matadouro, o que lhe confere uma aura mais sinistra, como palco do evento. Faixas como "Sheep", inevitavelmente ganham um sentimento mais profundo. "Roger" não manifesta seus gritos em nenhum momento dos shows.

"Welcome to the Machine", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (partes 6-9)" que dura mais de 20 min. e contém um grande dueto entre "Gilmour" e "Snowy White",  e o encore "Money", (que em Paris, têm seu desempenho integral, visto que ao longo da turnê são tocados apenas fragmentos desta em conjunto com "Us and Them"), são consideradas os maiores destaques em Paris. Também em "Money" que têm duração de 10 min., uma boa performance de "Parry" no sax, acompanhado por "Gilmour" e "Snowy" em outro dueto grandioso.

O público parisiense se mostra entusiasmado, participando sempre, mas sem prejuízo das músicas a nível de possíveis ruídos nas gravações, em nenhum momento. Na minha opinião, "Animals" é uma turnê brilhante, de um dos meus álbuns preferidos. A gravação é excelente em mais um trabalho caprichoso da Godfather Records. Boa audição!

 "France 1971" - Gravação com excelente qualidade extraída de uma transmissão da estação rádio francesa Europe 1, em junho de 1971. Este registro remasterizado pela gravadora japonesa Super Sonic em 2001, é considerado o melhor lançamento desde então. Boa audição!

From a First Generation tape, of the April 30, 1995 rebroadcast by the French radio station, Europa 1. The Sound Quality is EX, making it essential for collectors. This snippet is about 22 minutes total length, however the original ORTF Radio, France broadcast was around 60 minutes.
